Description and Size
To 3 inches (75mm). Scissortail damselfish are a drab grey color, and are somewhat more elongate than other damselfish in the Sea of Cortez.
Identifying Features
Deeply forked tail, with a bright white spot below the rear end of the pectoral fin.
Range
From the northern Sea of Cortez near San Felipe, south to Peru and the Galapagos Islands.
Habitat
Midwater over reefs from 15-50 feet, although they are occasionally found as deep as 250 feet (76 m).
Behavior and Ecology
Scissortail damselfish are unusual in that they are a schooling fish that prefers the openwater environment over reefs where the fed on plankton. They also often will associate with king angelfish, Holocanthus passer in large feeding aggregations.
