Key Features: There is only one species of porgy that is found in the Sea of Cortez, the Pacific Porgy, Calamus brachysomus. This is a large fish reaching up to two feet in length (0.6m) and weighing as much as five pounds (2.3kg). Although superficially resembling grunts, porgies may be differentiated by the presence of a broad and deeply tapered snout and strong molariform teeth. It is found in California, Sea of Cortez, Western Mexico, and south to Peru.
